Cryotherapy is a simple procedure that uses the cold to remove abnormal cells from your cervix. The cells are frozen quickly so that they are destroyed. Some of the surrounding healthy tissue will also be affected but only in a small area.

What are the Reasons for Having the Cryo Procedure?

Cryotherapy is one of the treatments used to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix to prevent cervical cancer. It could be the right option for you if:

You had an abnormal result on your smear test

The abnormalities were confirmed by a colposcopy

The abnormal cells are in the lower part of the cervix. If the cells are higher up, you may need a different treatment such as a cone biopsy instead

The cryo procedure can also be used to remove cells that are growing on the lining of the cervix. If the growth is causing problems such as discomfort during sex, bleeding or discharge, it can be removed with cryotherapy.

What to Expect

The cryo procedure can be performed by your gynaecologist at the Lotus Muayenehane. The entire procedure should take about 30 minutes:

You will be asked to remove the lower half of your clothes and lie down

A speculum will be used to hold open your vagina, like when you have a smear test

You may be given medication to numb the cervix

A probe will be used to direct liquid carbon dioxide onto the abnormal cells. You will hear the gas moving through the probe.

The cells will be frozen for a few minutes. The treatment may need to be repeated.

You may feel some discomfort or cramping. The treated area can feel cold, while your upper body may start to feel warmer.

What Happens Next

You should be able to return to your normal activities the day after the cryo procedure. However, over the next two to three weeks:

You will have some watery discharge from your vagina

You should wear pads rather than use tampons if you have your period

You should avoid having sex

Although the cryo procedure is very safe, there is a small risk of complications such as an infection. You should contact your doctor if you notice any of the following side effects:

Fever

Yellowish or smelly discharge

Bleeding that is heavier than your usual period

Pelvic pain that gets worse

After having cryotherapy, you will need to return to the office for regular smear tests every few months until it is certain that all of the abnormal cells have been eliminated. The cryo procedure is very effective, so a single treatment is successful for most
