A hysteroscopy is a procedure that uses a special camera to examine your uterus. The procedure can be slightly uncomfortable, but it should take less than half an hour.

The results can help to diagnose gynaecological problems and guide your treatment.

What Are The Reasons for Having a Hysteroscopy?

Your doctor may recommend a hysteroscopy:

if you are experiencing symptoms such as heavy periods, pelvic pain or unusual bleeding

to confirm a diagnosis such as fibroids or polyps

for the removal of fibroids, polyps or other growths

to locate or remove a displaced contraceptive implant

What to Expect

A hysteroscopy is an investigation to look at the lining of your womb or uterus.

You will be asked to remove the lower half of your clothing and lie down with your legs raised.

A speculum will sometimes be used to hold open your vagina during the procedure, just like when you have a cervical smear.

The hysteroscope will be inserted into your vagina. It is a small, flexible tube with a light and camera at the end. The camera will pass through the vagina and up into your womb.

A small amount of fluid will then be pumped through the hysteroscope tube to fill your uterus so that the doctor can get a clear view of the lining.

The images from the hysteroscope will be displayed on a screen in the consulting room so that your doctor can see what is going on inside your uterus.

A sample of tissue may be taken for testing in the lab. Growths such as fibroids and polyps can also sometimes be removed during a hysteroscopy.

The procedure will usually take about 15 to 30 minutes, but it could be longer if treatment is being performed during the hysteroscopy.

What Happens Next
